I'm not sure where's this creative spurt is coming from but I'm enjoying the ride and getting into to blogging again. so i hope it isnt too painful for those who read this.

I'm saving dollars at the moment, so DIY presents are in order. it was my friend's birthday last week. I bought her a notebook and pretty/personalized it. Part of the way i show love to people is through making things and choosing nice presents. So i really enjoy doing this kind of stuff even though it takes a bit of time.

Front page. I photocopied an old children's story book and stamped the title. I love using text in my work.

Drawing for St Hilary's art show september 2011. A montage of church commmuntiy surroundings. This was th basis for the textile piece below. It was a collaborative effort between myself and Russell Llloyd.

Hanging Thread drawing: Stitched onto wash-away fabric and then coated in a fabric hardner.

My mum's 50th: inspired by black and white photographs of my mum Julie, russell and i painted black and white photocopies with water colour to create a nostalgic ambiance.

The drive way. White paper bags with a water colour print on front filled with sand and a tea light candle. A glowing fairy tale walk way. this was Russell's concept.

Summary 2010 and first half of 2011

In my last post (a year and half ago), I said I'd been a slacker and had not continued to make my brooches and pendants. Well that part is true. I took a break from making "made by Sarah" stuff for about a year. But to keep me sane, I've explored other creative mediums.

I've explored analogue photography. I bought a Diana lomo camera about a year ago and have had fun taking photos, not knowing what then the result will look like. I also purchased a Nikon D3100 SLR, a treat to myself for working in the textile industry for a year. Being able to upload beautiful, high pics to my blog was another incentive.
I've also undertaken two projects with my friend Russell Lloyd, a theatre designer and creative director. One a textile piece for an art show, the other decorations for my mum's 50th birthday. Working in an industry in which I'm told what to create, I've found a few different creative outlets to keep my creative juices flowing. This is essential to maintain my creative well being. Your probably thinking this sounds a bit wanky, but as a creative person i think it's true. If i stop making stuff then i start to get flat. I have to continue being creative to keep creative.

What else have i done? Made presents for friends,like the carrot brooch pictured. Continued to be involved in the Village Festival, a festival run in conjunction with the Falls Festival that runs over New Year's in Lorne, Vicotria and Marion Bay, Tasmania. It runs as an alternative space for people to come tand see live musis, comedy or just hang out. I run craft workshops and co-ordinated the Village Studio. It has given me opportunities to collaborate with other artists and do what I'm good at; chatting and making stuff. I really enjoy facilitating art and allowing people to be creative with a bunch of random materials. This year, we did a zombie march through the main arena, scaring punters in our zombie garb. It was amazing! See me as a zombie below.

As 2011 progresses, i continue to make stuff (including Made by Sarah), lead a group of grade 2 children in Sunday Club, be a good friend and daughter, design socks etc. But I still try to find time to keep my creative juices flowing to maintain my sanity.

i've been slightly slack with blog post. christams was market crazy and then worked alot. i willl get into the swing of blogging and crafting soon. just started a new job, so just getting used to that at the moment. will keep you updated wiuth crafty-ness.

Up and coming markets

I'm lucky enough to be part of great markets in November and December.

Northside makers is a craft collective based in the Northern suburbs run by three ambitous crafty ladies. The idea is that markets are held in the summer and making can be done in the winter. The next market is on the 28th November 10:30am-3:30pm at the Northcote Uniting Church in Northcote, 251 High St Northcote.

on the 4th december i'll be at twighlight market run by Camberwell Baptist from 7pm onwards.

And on the 7 December, Borders Carlton is accomadating myself and 9 other makers to present "Where Craft Meets 3053". This is an awesome opportunity for me but also to check out some lovely books for christmas and maybe a hand-crafted creations as well.

Artists such Finki, Mrs Beckinsdale, Betty and Hamish, Found and Bound, Konsant Kaos, Cserpant Art, Cat MacInnes, Our Sweet William and me Made by Sarah.

Should be a great market, it's also cheap Mondays at the Nova, so you could see a movie then check out the market. i was lucky enough to be able to choose which makers appeared at this market. they make beautiful things, so come down and see us.

RMIT Textile Design Grad Show

Hello all,

The final year textile design students at RMIT are celebrating finishing uni and exhibiting our work at No Vacancy gallery at QV, Jane Bell Lane (off Russell st, in the city).

Open to the public Nov 19 (this thursday) and there's an opening night 20 Nov. But you can come and check it out till the December 2nd.

So if you love textiles and would be interested in doing this course or similar come have a look and be inspired.

So, i was interviewed by an Age journalist a couple of months ago. i contacted her and she interviewed me. i thought i was going to be in on october 3 but there wan't enough room. i wasn't convinced it was going to be in today and it was. i was so excited i almost cried. great publicity already, had a couple of people contact me.

I'm famous, in melbourne at least!!!!!!

Well, after a rush of getting ready, making ten babushkas and photographing them this morning for etsy, i had a great day at the northside makers market at the northcote uniting church. my work was well received, which is always nice. chatted to some friendly makers and some customers as well. was very encouraged.

here are some pics of the day my sister was very good helper and kep the stress, down to minimum. It was extremely sunny but cooled down in the arvo and i thought i was going to rain.

Here's an image of recent project i did, creating maternity sleepwear for the online market.

I screen printed 5 meters of fabric for the garment, got professionally made and photographed.

It was my own hand-drawn interpretation of Indian ethnic designs.

Well, hoping that i'll have more people viewing this, i'll post some of my other work on here.

These are some of my prints from this year, inspired by blue china ceramics and contemporary Scandanavian design. The scarf was inspired by Melbourne's meeting places and melways maps of places I've lived. Hope you enjoy.

Well, what a rewarding day at craft hatch. I was very encouraged to hear that people have already heard about my work through craft hatch. just then i checked this women's blog (her name's jennie and she makes gorgeous tram cushions) and she mentioned my work as "inspiring"!!! So encouraging. So i had a successful day, a few opportunities arose and few networks made in the world of craft. very exciting!!!

Hi! Welcome to the home of cute babushkas and all things fabric inspired! I'm sarah and I study textile design. In my spare time (not that i have much), i make these cute brooches and pendants for people like you to enjoy. i also design and print my own fabrics which is lots of fun.

So feel free to give feedback on my work or follow my blog. I'm learning what works and what doesn't, so would love to hear what you think.
